The function of the oil filter is to filter impurities from the engine oil in order to protect the engine. This is a very important task in the closed oil circuit, which is best performed by high quality products. We therefore offer you ORIGINAL oil filters and filter inserts from vehicle manufacturers at favourable prices. In the lower part of the page we explain the function of the engine oil filter in more detail. We also go into the oil filter change and show why buying an oil filter is so important and why the change intervals should be observed.
The function of an oil filter in the carThe engine oil lubricates the mechanical components in the combustion engine. Due to the enormous heat during the combustion process, parts of the engine oil can burn. In addition, over time impurities are deposited in the engine oil, such as:
These would cause wear on the piston rings, cylinder walls and other components and ultimately cause engine damage. The engine oil filter filters these particles and residues out of the engine oil circuit.
The oil filter is located directly on the engine. The engine oil is pumped from the oil pan via the oil pump through the connections into the oil filter housing. The oil filter housing contains the filter element in which the oil is filtered through pleated filter paper. The pleating creates a larger surface area. This also makes the oil filter more durable, as it cannot clog so quickly.
Engine oil filters can be categorized in two designs:
The screw filter is completely replaced, as it is a unit consisting of filter housing and filter insert. The paper filter insert, on the other hand, is replaced individually from the oil filter. The oil filter insert is the more environmentally friendly option, as it can be fully recycled. The type of filter you need depends on the design of the engine oil filter and your vehicle.
Modern engine oil filters are equipped with a return valve, which prevents a return flow of the engine oil when the engine is cold or switched off. Also a so-called bypass valve or also by-pass valve is partly installed in the cars. This opens in the case of a particularly dirty oil filter and allows the unfiltered engine oil to run past the filter. This is because a missing or restricted oil supply leads to so-called piston seizure. Indications of a clogged oil filter can be decreasing engine performance and increasing oil consumption.
The engine oil filter should be changed with every oil change. This prevents the dirt and residues of the old oil from being absorbed again by the new engine oil. Thus the interval for changing the oil filter and the engine oil is the same. It is not possible to clean the filter insert. Therefore, the oil filter or filter insert must always be replaced.
The service interval for the oil change can be found in the service booklet or the operating instructions. There are also vehicles with a flexible oil change service that calculates the interval based on individual driving style and operating conditions.
Oil filters can have defects or even break down completely. If the replacement interval of the engine oil filter is too long or if the filter is very clogged, the filter insert can tear. Even if lubricants or engine oil of inferior quality or an inferior filter is used, the oil filter can break. But also an improper installation of the filter can lead to defects. In rare cases, the oil pressure control valve may also be defective or heavily soiled, causing the oil filter to expand.
Notes for a defective engine oil filter are:
ORIGINAL oil filters are made of the highest quality materials and have a long service life. It is therefore worth relying on them, as they have been tested for leaks and can withstand the permissible oil pressure. Together with an ORIGINAL engine oil it is guaranteed that they will function perfectly until the next maintenance interval. We also have a wide range of matching ORIGINAL engine oil and ready-made oil change sets with oil and oil filter.
In principle, an oil filter change can be carried out by yourself with skill and technical knowledge. However, there are some things to be considered. For example, the engine oil filter must not be turned too tightly and must be filled with a little oil before insertion. It must also be ensured that no used oil leaks out. Health aspects should also be considered. Contact with the skin or eyes must be avoided at all costs. We therefore recommend that anyone who is not familiar with this should leave it to an expert or a workshop. Mistakes when changing the oil filter can lead to malfunctions of the engine.
As the oil filter should best be replaced every time the oil is changed, the engine oil must be drained off beforehand. When changing the oil filter, a suitable oil filter wrench or oil filter claw and, of course, a new ORIGINAL oil filter or oil filter insert may be required. The old filter soaked with oil and also old engine oil must then be disposed of properly, as the engine oil is toxic and harmful to the environment. Both are regarded as hazardous waste.
Here you will find the ORIGINAL oil filter for your vehicle. Here it depends on the part number installed ex works during the production of the vehicle, which determines the correct spare part for your vehicle. With input of the vehicle data in our shop, the suitable articles are indicated to you. If you have any further questions, please contact our Customer Service and tell us your 17-digit vehicle identification number. You will find this number in your vehicle registration document or your registration certificate.
